Integrated Computer Engineering
During the nearly three decades of existence of the Department of CSE, the global computer engineering technology environment has been through tremendous advances, innovations and transformations. Key among these changes is the move towards an embedded ubiquitous immersive environment driven by industrial scale computing systems. While the large-scale high-performance computing systems housed in massive data centers interconnected via high-speed high-bandwidth networks drive the global commerce and governance, embedded systems on people, vehicles, building and infrastructure are creating exciting new technological opportunities.
The Department of CSE with the support of its industry partners and its global community of alumni have studied these evolutionary trends in the field of computer engineering and have decided to take the lead again to create an industry segment that would propel the Sri Lankan economy to greater success. With this objective, the Department of CSE will commence a new degree specialization, Integrated Computer Engineering (ICE), focusing on the design, development and operation of embedded and ubiquitous devices, systems, applications and services.
While the proposed specialization of Integrated Computer Engineering (ICE) shares several subject modules with the existing specialization of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), the new ICE specialization is designed to produce computer engineers whose core competencies are significantly different from the software engineering oriented graduates produced by the existing CSE specialization. From 2014 January, the Department of CSE will conduct two stream, CSE and ICE, within the Computer Science & Engineering specialization.
