The Animal Protection Trust (APT) formally known as The Sri Lanka Animal Protection Association (SLAPA), is a non-profit organization that t endeavors to foster humane treatment to all animals in Sri Lanka. Our activities include rehabilitation and re-homing of abandoned puppies and kittens, treatment of accident cases, vaccinations against Rabies and other animal diseases. We promote and undertake sterilizations programs amongst cats and dogs. We advocate sterilization as the only humane method of reducing the stray animal population, thereby reducing the incidence of Hydrophobia amongst humans. We are engaged in Court action against illegal transportation and slaughter of cattle and buffaloes ,Island wide. Confiscated cattle who are given to us are taken to safe areas where they are fed and watered and given veterinary treatments if necessary. We are also engaged in court action to update archaic laws relating to animals and bring in new laws, particularly in regard to Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Butcher’s Ordinance. We run two shelters for abandoned and injured cats & dogs. One shelter accommodates approximately sixty cats, who were in danger of drowning in a Nawala canal during the May 2010 floods. This was an emergency rescue where the fire brigade too came to our assistance to save the cats. We organized Petitions Island wide and a large public protest demonstration in 2011 and 2012 in order to prevent the barbaric ritual animal sacrifice from taking place at Bhadrakali Amman kovil at Munneswaram. We also filed action in the Court of Appeal to stop the animal sacrifice this year (2013). A three judge bench gave an unanimous decision in our favour. Most recently we have opened a vet clinic and the surgery of our own called RAINBOW PETS. This clinic will give professional and caring treatment at affordable prices. This clinic will charge concessional rate to those who are genuinely engaged in work amongst street animals. This clinic is managed by qualified Vet surgeons who will be on duty from 8 am to 8 pm, 7 days a week. We are also prepared to take house calls, dog training and grooming by appointment.
