The University of Jaffna is a public university in the city of Jaffna in Sri Lanka. Established in 1974 as the sixth campus of the University of Sri Lanka, it became an independent, autonomous university in 1979. The university, like all public universities in Sri Lanka, receives the bulk of its funding from the University Grants Commission (UGC), part of the Ministry of Higher Education in Colombo. The UGC and the central government therefore exert a great deal of control over the university.The university has two campuses - the main campus in Thirunelvely in Jaffna and a second campus in Vavuniya. It also has facilities in Kilinochchi, Kaithady and Maruthanarmadam near Chunnakam. The university currently has nine faculties (Agriculture, Applied Science, Arts, Business Studies, Engineering, Graduate Studies, Management Studies & Commerce, Medicine and Science) and nine other academic centers. The university offers numerous undergraduate and postgraduate courses which award a variety of degrees including BA, BBA, BBM, BCom, BFA,BICT, B.Pharm, BSc, BSc(Agr), LLB, MA, MEd, MBBS and MSc.

Hartley College

Hartley College is a provincial school in Point Pedro, Sri Lanka. Founded in 1838 by British Methodist missionaries, it is one of Sri Lanka's oldest schools. The school is named after Wesleyan priest and missionary Rev. Hartley.HistoryMethodist missionaries from Britain arrived in Ceylon on 29 June 1814. The Wesleyan Mission Central School was founded in 1838 by Rev. Dr. Peter Percival. The school is located at the current location of the Methodist Girls' High School. The school transferred to its current site in 1874. The school was renamed Christ Church School in 1912 and Hartley College in 1916.Most private schools in Ceylon were taken over by the government in 1960. Hartley College becomes a publicly funded school on 1 December 1960.Following a fire in 1984, the school moved to Puttalai from 1985 to 1990. In 1989, the school appeared on a postage stamp issued to commemorate its 150th anniversary. From 1996 to 2002, part of the school was occupied by the Sri Lanka Army, and the school remains in a high security zone. The Advanced Technological Institute, Jaffna was established in 1996 in a part of Muththuthambi Maha Vidiyalaya and later shifted to Palaly Teacher Training College. Initially the Institute offered two Higher National Diploma courses and three National Diploma courses; Higher National Diploma in Accountancy (HNDA), Higher National Diploma in Management (HNDM) and National Diploma in English (NDE- In 2006 it was changed as HNDE), National Diploma in Business Studies (NDBS) and National Diploma in Business Finance (NDBF - discontinued in 2005). Higher National Diploma programme in Information Technology (HNDIT) was commenced in 2007 with 52 students.
