The school now has a student body of over 5,000 girls. W. Adikaram, a scholar, educationist, writer, philosopher and a humanist, and the pioneer principal, Mrs. P. B. Fernando. The school was started on the 4th of January 1941 under the patronage of Deshamanya D. S. Senanayake, then the Minister of Agriculture. The Board of Governors was: Dr. P. B. Fernando Dr. D. P. Malalasekara Mr. R. W. Rupasinghe Mr. D. D. Kodagoda Mr. D. L. F. Pedris Mr. T. U. de Silva Mr. R. Premaratne Mr. N. Wijasooriya Mr. S. R. Wijethilake Pioneer Principal - Mrs. P. B. Fernando - served the school from 1941 till 1956. She donated her total salary towards obtaining a block of land for the school and a scholarship scheme.Her name will remain for ever in the memories of the students and teachers who reaped the benefits of her sympathetic and gentle ways. Walls of the school buildings still retain the fragrance of the deeds and sacrifices made by Mrs. P. B. Fernando and her pioneer staff.
