The Location – Belihuloya This beautiful hillside location which is 155 km from Colombo ( 3 hours drive ) is a climatically transitional area, linking both the dry and wet zones. As a result, Belihuloya has named one of the richest bio-diversity spots in Sri Lanka. Belihuloya is famous among nature lovers and adventure holiday seekers for rafting, hill climbing, trekking and camping. Landa Holiday House is situated just by the side of beautiful Kiriwanalanda stream, a tributory of Belihul Oya.It is overgrown with green and overrun with water. As you descend the staircase to the river, all you can hear is the roar of water from the surrounding water features and the continuous sounds of the birds. It is specially designed to blend with nature and caters mainly to honeymooners, families and people who are dying to have a peace of mind.The design and landscaping was done by Mr. Jeffrey VanderLee who is a professional lanscaper from Netherlands and he is the business partner of Landa Holiday Houses. Accommodation here is in the form of solidly built terracotta and timber chalets with a view of the jungle and the water stream. The way the buildings are integrated into the landscape, the design of the rooms, the unfussy, obliging service and most of all, the forest and water make anyone to return over and over again. Accommodation There are two separate villas with each consisting of two double bedrooms all with balconies overlooking the landscaped gardens, the stream at the edge of the garden and paddy fields beyond. Each far from each other. It is so overgrown with trees that if you're in one building, you can't really even see the other building. All the rooms are stylishly designed with expensive and exclusive wooden furniture and have attached bathrooms with h/w showers. Overhead fans help to keep the rooms cool and comfortable.One building has two connected family rooms, each one with a big bed, TV/DVD and loft bed. The other, closer to the river and more private, has two unconnected rooms that are more suitable for couples with river views and four poster beds but no TV/DVD. All rooms are equipped with coffee / tea making facilities and some have TV. All rooms have separate entrances providing for much privacy. Tree House There is a tree house which is ideal for bird watching and suitable for more adventureious and eco friendly visitors. It has a proper staircase leading up to it and a full bed with a spring mattress hung hammock style. There is a toilet inside the tree house. Food Sri Lankan rice and curries are served here cooked by an `archchi’ – elder female from the village in true traditional style over a hearth and served in clay pots. Tours and Excursions We can arrange trekking up to Horton Plains through Nonpareil Estate, Devils staircase from Kalupahana to Ohiya and camping in Samanalawewa area. In addition,nature trekking in the village and bird watching can be organized.One day excursions or round tours to nearby attractions on 4 WD vehicles, luxury cars or vans can be arranged on prior notice. The Belihuloya is a popular site in Sri Lanka. It is widely visited by tourists from various countries in the world. Even local travelers love to visit the site of Belihuloya. The Belihuloya is a perfect location to spend some days peacefully far away from the madding crowd and hustle and bustle of city life. River Belihul Oya – 500 m from Landa Holiday Home The River Belihul Oya, just 20km in length, originates on Horton Plains National Park (1524m) high above, then flows, gushes, tumbles & drops through an assortment of eco systems all the way to into modern man-made Samanalawewa Reservoir. The river, watched over by series of mountain peaks including Gon Molliya ("The Hump of an Ox") & Paravi ("Pigeon"), crates some very beautiful waterfalls in its downhill path. Paddy fields surrounding the settlement are fed by streams from the river. Belihuloya is one of the best bathing spots in Sri Lanka for safe river bathing.Number of travelers both local and foreign come for bathing especially during weekends. University of Sabaragamuwa – 1 km from Landa Holiay Home Belihuloya is home to the Sabaragamuwa University. This is a very picturesque and romantic place. Bambarakanda Falls – 30 minuts drive from Landa Holiday Homes The Bambarakanda Falls is the highest waterfall of Sri Lanka measuring 790 feet. It is situated 4900 feet above the sea level. The waterfall starts from the Mahaeliya in Horton Plains The sight of the fall is still worth watching. The lush mountains surrounding the fall give it a wonderful look. Horton Planes – one and half hour drive from Landa Holiday Homes Horton Planes is the highest plateau in the country. It has a rich biodiversity. To the tourists, nature walk in Horton Plains Nature Reserve is very popular. In the Horton Plains, you will come across Elk, Deer, Giant Squirrel, Wild Boar, Wild Hare,Porcupine, and a variety of Migratory birds, which are unique to this region. There are 16 Leopards in Horton Plains. If you are very lucky you may get a glimpse of a Leopard during your travel in the Horton Plains. The total distance of trekking in side the park is approximately of 6 kilometers Samanalawewa Reservoir, Dam and Hydroelectric Project – 45 minutes trekking from Landa Holiday Homes This 100 meters high dam has created a reservoir of nearly 350 sq. km. of water at the confluence of the Walawe Ganga and Belihuloya. This dam was completed in 1991 by the Japanese contractors. The still and calm waters of the Samanalawewa reservoir are perfect for canoeing. You can go for a leisurely paddle for a couple of hours in the Belihuloya River. The power station of the hydroelectric project which has a capacity of 120 MW is located about 6 kilometers from the dam at Kapugala. Permission to visit should be obtained from the Ceylon Electricity Board. Kinchigune Kinchigune is a small village at the outskirt of the samanalawewa, on the other side of the dam.
