Royal College General Knowledge Club
The roots of General Knowledge Club dates back to 1976 where it was initiated as "General Knowledge Society". The Club was formed in 1981. Mr. N.I. Wijesekara was the first Student Chairman. Mrs. Padmini Rajapakse, a great enthusiast of Quizzing, was the founding Teacher-in-charge, the post she held until she retired in early 1990's. Mrs. O.C. Samarasinghe and Mrs. Mano Kalupahana succeeded her. By this time, the Club has initiated the first ever Inter-School Quiz Contest organized by a Sri Lankan school, which still exists as "Blue & Gold Quiz".
The prestigious ‘Blue & Gold Inter School Quiz’, which has been organized for 20 consecutive years, is the longest Running Quiz in Sri Lanka. In 2007, it was attended by 49 schools, a record team participation for a Quiz in Sri Lanka.
Currently Mrs. Disna Ranjani is the Senior Teacher in Charge and she is supported by Mrs. Nilmini Jayasekara.
Royal College Quiz Team is affiliated to the Club. There's a tradition, which says that the Student Chairman or the General Secretary should be a Quiz team member. It has been helpful to maintain the strong connection between the Club and the Team. The Quiz team has continued its winning spirit to this day being recognized as the best Quiz Team in Sri Lanka.
