ஆலயம்: `ஆ' என்றால் ஆன்மா. `லயம்' என்றால் வயப்படுதல் அல்லது ஒன்றுபடுதல். ஜீவாத்மாவாகிய மனிதர்களை, பரமாத்மாவாகிய, இறைவனுடன் ஐக்கியப்படுத்துவதற்கு ஏற்ற இடம் என்பதால் `ஆலயம்' என்கிற பெயர் வந்தது. கோவில்: `கோ' என்றால் அரசன். `இல்' என்றால் இல்லம். ஆதிகாலத்தில், அரசர்கள் வாழ்ந்து வந்த அரண்மனைகளுக்குத் தான் கோவில் என்று பெயர். புறநானுறில், `சோழன் கோவில்' என்றும், பரிபாடலில், `கண்ணன் கோவில்' என்றும், பட்டினப்பாலையில் `வெண்கோவில்' என்றும் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளதை இதற்கு உதாரணங்களாகக் கூறலாம். `கோ' என்பதற்கு `தலைவன்' என்றும் ஒரு பொருள் இருப்பதால் அனைத்து படைப்புகளுக்கும் தலைவனாக விளங்கும் இறைவனின் இல்லத்தை `கோவில்' என்றே அழைக்க ஆரம்பித்தார்கள். கோவிலுக்கு `கோட்டம்', `அம்பலம்' என்ற பெயர்களும் உண்டு.
