Children thrive under good caregivers. Later, as adults, they become well-balanced leaders within their own circles. Parents are a child’s best caregiver but it cannot always be so. High-quality Day-time activities which caters for infants and children of 06 months onwards has still not been identified in Colombo. Following a trend, all those qualified and some not-qualified or partly-qualified in the field of childcare, opens up a Montessori/Nursery in any vacant space. These facilities usually function from 7.30 am – 12 noon after which children stay on in unstructured programs in what is termed as “daycare centres.” Here, children eat cold, clammy and often stale meals sent by parents. The food is cooked at home and served into plastic boxes or sometimes bought. Food spoils quickly due to humidity. Children are then given snacks/fast food instead of a wholesome meal. Aggressiveness abounds and often normal children are termed as ADD/ADHD due to these conditions. Very often children also end up carrying labels such as ‘slow-learners’ or ‘learning disabled’ due to no fault of theirs. These are attractive tags to beguile unsuspecting and gullible parents. Overcrowding and poor quality teachers are another drawback at these centres. However, parents do not have a choice. At the helm of this scenario are the children who are continuing to receive poor quality childcare and nutrition. Ironically, these are the children of parents who can afford luxuries. Our Alma – Mater Janadhipathi Balika Vidyalaya, Nawala, was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of the Western Province, Hon. Mr. Susil Premajayanth, on 14th of February 1996. Mrs. Malini Abeysekera Dissanayake the founder principal was given the responsibility of reawakening the school Diyawanna Vidyalaya under the banner of Janadhipathi Balika Vidyalaya. The school is located in the picturesque surrounding of the Diyawanna Valley, bounded by the Diyawanna Oya, in the township of Nawala. The time of inauguration the school had 13 students & 1 teacher. By the third term of the year of 1996, there were 37 students & 5 teachers. It is interesting to note that by the year 1997, the school has received 410 applications for grade 1 class. It should be stated that the founder principal & the staff were responsible for the progress achieved by the school. In 1997 a grade 6 class with 6 students commenced in addition to the grade 1 classes. In the same year grade 5 scholarship holders also joined the school. In 1997 the school was upgraded by the Ministry of Education as category 3 school. The commitment & dedication of Mrs. Malini Abeysekera Dissanayake & the staff built up the academic elevation & the prestige of the school. After 5 years of deliberation the school was able to send 14 students for the G.C.E.O/L & 13 students for the G.C.E.A/L examination in the year 2001. In the year 2002, Advanced Level classes for Commerce & Arts stream were started. In the year 2004, 5 students from the Arts Stream were selected to enter the university. From a primary school the school developed into a secondary school & finally to a leading popular school within a period of 15 years. The progress achieved gradually reached the climax in the year 2008, possessing a staff of 101 teachers & nearly 3000 students. The school was categorized as a 1 AB school. In addition to the studies, the students under the guidance of the teachers have excelled in the fields of sports & co-curricular activities. Our students have won many All Island Competitions as well as International Competitions. The fact that is noteworthy is that the students have won many swimming competitions, although the school does not possess a swimming pool.
