Some of the annual feeding and reproduction cycles of the blue, humpback and other whales as well as dolphins conclude in the waters south of Sri Lanka / Mirissa. Some scientists believe there are also "residential" blue whales off the southern coast of Sri Lanka in addition to the annual "migratory" ones. The period between January and April is also a good time for seeing dolphins often times fishing in pods of hundreds.

Blue whales - the largest creatures on Earth - Humpback whales, Dolphins, Sperm whales, Orcas (killer whales), flying fish, can all seen a few miles off the South Coast of Sri Lanka. The Whales and Dolphins come to this region to feed on the Small fish that comes to the Indian Ocean. There are three pods (families) of Whales that return to this area every year and they consist of approximately 40 - 60 whales.
