Ahinsa Tea

Ahinsa Tea

Ihala Millawa, Morawaka ,
For more than 20 years, we have exerted great efforts to produce labor-friendly and nature-friendly black tea in Sri Lanka. The dream became a reality when Ahinsa Tea was originally produced about six years ago in a small estate in the southern part of Sri Lanka. It was perhaps the first time manually-produced organic black tea was introduced to the world. In Sanskrit, 'Ahinsa' means non-violent and the tea is produced with the most benevolent and fullest kindness to all -- human beings, animals and plants. It took a while for them to organize required capital, land, resources and technical know-how to convert this manually produced organic black tea into commercial venture. Finally a new era was born when the Nilmini Estate (Pvt.) Ltd., Ihala Millawa, Morawaka, Sri Lanka was formed and started producing Ahinsa Tea in a large scale. Today, the Nilmini Estate produces a wide variety of organic teas to your specific requirements

Handunugoda Estate, Tittagalla, Ahangama ,
Handunugoda is 200 acre property, comprising of Tea, Rubber, Cinnamon, Pepper and Coconut plantations. This Estate is just 15 minutes away from the main tourist resort area of Koggala, in the southern province of Sri Lanka. It may perhaps be the closest tea plantation in the world to the sea. It abounds with a variety of Bird and animal life. The conditions are almost like a Rainforest. The peacock, monkey, porcupine and the mouse deer can be seen if the Visitor is lucky and picks the correct time. You are welcome at any time between 8 AM and 6 PM. You are kindly requested to leave behind only your footprints. There is no entrance fee to visit the plantation. All visitors are treated to a complimentary cup tea and cakes at the plantation bungalow. We will however be not unhappy if you will buy your requirements of tea from the array of world famous speciality teas which are laid out for your tasting in our ultra modern tasting salon! We have a well equipped tea and Rubber factory. The tea factory is a living and working Museum. The machines are 150 years old and still working smoothly. The Machinery bears mute testimony to the British skills of engineering. We differ from most plantations in the Island. We produce only a small quantity of special teas. Our emphasis is on the health giving properties of tea. The plantation does not use any pesticides or insecticides. Our teas have won international acclaim and awards. The Virgin white tea of Handunugoda, our flagship, was presented by Jane Pettigrew at the World Expo in Las Vegas and won praise and appreciation. In Sri Lanka we won the award by the National Chamber of Exporters as the Best small scale exporter. Three of our teas are in the Superior presentation packs of Sri Lanka’s biggest brand market leader Dilmah. The Anuga Food fair in Cologne Germany adjudged three of our teas presented by Dilmah as the most innovative teas in the world. Our Virgin white Tea is marketed in the worlds most exclusive tea stores-Mariage freres International of Faubourg Saint Honore in Paris. We are also developing the Only Private Tea Museum in the world. In this, we will endeavour to tell the Human story of tea. The Museum will be commissioned for public view in March 2012.
