Islamic Online University Sri Lanka

Islamic Online University Sri Lanka

Islamic Online University offers tuition-free Islamic courses leading to certificates, diplomas and degrees taught completely in English with the exception of Arabic language. Its courses are accessible from two streams: 1. The first stream consists of free intensive courses from the traditional fields of Islamic disciplines in separate topics of immediate, practical relevance and benefit to new students of Islam. It is a structured program where the courses are arranged into increasingly more advanced levels. Certificates are issued to graduates of each course and a diploma for those who complete all the courses offered. This stream also serves as an introduction to online study for students who wish to pursue the BA in Islamic Studies. 2. The second stream is a full-fledged formal Islamic Studies (Usool Ad-Deen) Degree Program in English (BAIS). This course is taught completely Online. Course Material, provided online, will consist of written material of the basic text being taught plus Audio and Video Lectures of classes, and live tutorial classes. ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ IOU’s current programs are of three types: 1. FREE COURSES: A series of free courses arranged into an organized program of study wherein students who follow the recommended sequence will embark on a study program guided by Dr Bilal Philips himself. The program provides an introduction to the basic Islamic sciences and insight into the manhaj or way of the Prophet (pbuh) as embodied in the Qur'aan and authentic Sunnah in accordance with the understanding of the first generation. Some of the courses will be on topics of immediate and practical relevance to the students. The free course of study will also introduce students who wish to pursue an accredited BA or MA in Islamic Studies to the methodology of the BAIS program. 2. BA and MA COURSES: The other facet will be the full-fledged formally accredited Islamic Studies (Usool Ad-Deen) Degree Program in English (BAIS). Course Material will consist of written material of the basic text being taught plus Audio and Video Lectures of classes conducted in the ISA-Doha, or elsewhere. 3. DIPLOMAS & CERTIFICATES: Diplomas will be granted for the completion of all the courses offered in a given subject of the BAIS program. Certificates will be given for each of the free courses and a diploma for those who complete all of the free courses. The free course component of the IOU is currently open for enrollment. Those interested will first have to create a site account and then enroll for the courses of their choice. HISTORY The IOU was originally a product of Dr Bilal's teaching courses in Islamic Studies at the American University in Dubai for seven years after Islamizing the complete curriculums of study for the college of education of the Sharif Kabunsuan College in Cotabato City, Mindanao, Philippines in the early nineties. One year after the IOU’s establishment in 2001 the program ran into technical difficulties and had to shut down, however, the material developed for its courses was used to establish a department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Preston University – Ajman, UAE and three years later the department had its first batch of BA graduates. After running the Islamic Studies department at Preston for one year as its dean, Dr Bilal moved to Doha, Qatar, and in the beginning of 2007 established another BA in Islamic Studies (BAIS) program in Doha, approved by Omdurman Islamic University in Sudan for accreditation, under the title of the Islaamic Studies Academy. In April 2007 the Islamic Online University (IOU) reopened its doors with the popular Da’wah Training Course after a five-year interlude. To enhance the students’ leaning experience, the server and the LMS (Learning Management System) of the IOU have been upgraded. As a result, the courses now have audios and Flash format videos enabling easy viewing online for all types of internet connections. There are also monthly online live student forums with Dr Bilal, as well as general forums for students to discuss and research together. FOUNDER DR. ABU AMEENAH BILAL PHILIPS was born in Jamaica, West Indies, and grew up in Canada, where he accepted Islam in 1972. De La Salle College Colombo

De La Salle College Colombo

130, De La Salle Street, Mutwal, Colombo ,
The official facebook page of De La Salle College, Colombo manage by the OBU. De La Salle College, situated at the entrance to the fishing community at Mutwal, where the less - privileged and the marginalized eke out a modest existence, has been a haven of knowledge and inspiration to all and sundry during the last hundred years. It has very faithfully and constructively served thousands and thousands of students, adequately equipping them to face the challenges and exigencies of modern society, with courage and optimism. De La Salle College was opened on 01st February 1905 with 22 boys on roll. The object of this School is to give the boys of the Mutwal mission an opportunity to receive an elementary English Education. It is the first “English School” to be set up in this part of Colombo North. Starting from cadjan sheds and horse stable structures, the school now has a set of good buildings; one section of it has edged towards the cliff, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Tucked away in a corner of Mutwal, De La Salle College has rendered 100 years of educational facilities for the poor and middle class children of Colombo North. In the past 100 years the school has turned out many men for the professions, the public service and the private sector. The De La Salle Brothers who started this school, and who still have a hand in its management, strive to make their contribution to build up the just society through education of youth. Their guiding principle is that men must learn to live with love – maithriya in Buddhism – because love encompasses all. To be without love is to be like sounding brass. One must avoid the first place in the table, and banish the scowl of plety from his face. Many may passed out of their hands strive to live up to the golden rule. De La Salle was at first meant to be a practical school a kind of training school for young Brothers who had accepted the life of the monk-teacher and who were, and are inspired by the Founder’s promise that “those who instruct many unto justice shall shine as stars for all eternity”. Over the years eminent educationists, both De La Salle Brothers and Secular Teachers have adorned the educational firmament of the College, imparting a sound moral and values education. Apart from teaching them the rudiments, they also have taught them various skills that would ensure their future. Character formation was given the pride of place so that our students would become responsible, trustworthy and productive citizens of the country. De La Salle College’s persevering efforts to maintain the best traditions of Catholic education in the midst of many local difficulties and to bring the benefits of a Sound Catholic education to the sons of the struggling families of the neighbourhood. Local difficulties against which the developments of the institution had struggled during those 100 years of her existence: lack of space, want of financial support due to the general poverty of the locality, and continual changes of the government in Sri Lanka. De La Salle College has rendered valuable service to the people of Mutwal by toning up the rising generation culturally and religiously. In its own way, it has sent its alumni into various walks of life both in the Church and the State. One may regret it has failed to produce many educated fishermen to re-orientate the fishing industry of Colombo North. The sons of fishermen have gone to other fields of Endeavour, and the fishing industry here is languishing. True education aims at the full and balanced development of the child so that he may have a happy, peaceful and meaningful life on earth, while preparing for his eternal destiny. In the process, therefore, it turns out citizens of the highest caliber. This Institution has a proud record of dedicated service to the community since 1905 and marked its Centenary – “De La Salle Siyawasa” in 2005. Though elaborate plans were made to mark this historical event more fittingly and meaningfully, the unexpected natural disaster, the Tsunami, which shook not only Sri Lanka but the entire South Asian Region – coincided with the Centenary and therefore all plans came to a standstill. Due to the Tsunami Disaster, the Mutwal – Mattakuliya Beach Area too was badly affected. There were over 600 persons from about 144 displaced families given accommodation at our school for over three weeks. Our buildings, furniture, toilets, etc too were extensively damaged during this period. It is our hope and prayer that De La Salle College will yield still more abundant fruits for the glory of God and the welfare of Sri Lanka’s citizens.

Establishment of Nenasalas 1. e-Sri Lanka Initiative The e-Sri Lanka Initiative initiated by the Government of Sri Lanka aims to provide access to “diverse and unrestricted sources of information and means of communication” to all the citizens. The Government of Sri Lanka in recognizing the great potentials that Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can play in: • strengthening the democratic processes in the country, • the advancement of the peace process, • improving the quality of life of the people, and • enhancing the social and economic development 2. ICTA’s 1000 Nenasala(Knowledge Centre) Project The Nenasala Project is one of the projects implemented under the e-Sri Lanka Initiative. Formally known as the “Vishva Gnana Kendra Project (Nenasala)”, ICTA has incorporated it under the “Nenasala” label to introduce several models of the telecentres or knowledge centres to be established in all parts of Sri-Lanka to spread ICT services to the rural and semi-urban population. The Project will aim to meet the infrastructure requirements in order to address the information and communication needs of rural areas in all parts of the country through the establishment of Nenasalas, and the provision of ICT based services. As the diffusion and the use of ICTs in rural areas is limited, it is recognized that the most effective and efficient way to provide access to ICTs for rural areas will be through the establishment of Nenasalas. The main objectives of a Nenasala is to assist communities in: • poverty reduction • social and economic development, and • peace building. It is important to note that all the services and support to be provided by the Nenasalas are done in such a way as to aim / guarantee long-term sustainability. The lessons learned from the evaluation of the initial Nenasalas will be used in the establishment of the Nenasala Network across the country using the following models. ICTA will have 3 different types of Nenasalas or Knowledge Centres depending on the complexity and the type of services that will be offered. namely, 1. Rural Knowledge Centres, 2. e-Libraries, 3. Distance & e-Learning centres 4. Tunami camp computer kiosks.
