Our Alma – Mater Janadhipathi Balika Vidyalaya, Nawala, was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of the Western Province, Hon. Mr. Susil Premajayanth, on 14th of February 1996. Mrs. Malini Abeysekera Dissanayake the founder principal was given the responsibility of reawakening the school Diyawanna Vidyalaya under the banner of Janadhipathi Balika Vidyalaya. The school is located in the picturesque surrounding of the Diyawanna Valley, bounded by the Diyawanna Oya, in the township of Nawala. The time of inauguration the school had 13 students & 1 teacher. By the third term of the year of 1996, there were 37 students & 5 teachers. It is interesting to note that by the year 1997, the school has received 410 applications for grade 1 class. It should be stated that the founder principal & the staff were responsible for the progress achieved by the school. In 1997 a grade 6 class with 6 students commenced in addition to the grade 1 classes. In the same year grade 5 scholarship holders also joined the school. In 1997 the school was upgraded by the Ministry of Education as category 3 school. The commitment & dedication of Mrs. Malini Abeysekera Dissanayake & the staff built up the academic elevation & the prestige of the school. After 5 years of deliberation the school was able to send 14 students for the G.C.E.O/L & 13 students for the G.C.E.A/L examination in the year 2001. In the year 2002, Advanced Level classes for Commerce & Arts stream were started. In the year 2004, 5 students from the Arts Stream were selected to enter the university. From a primary school the school developed into a secondary school & finally to a leading popular school within a period of 15 years. The progress achieved gradually reached the climax in the year 2008, possessing a staff of 101 teachers & nearly 3000 students. The school was categorized as a 1 AB school. In addition to the studies, the students under the guidance of the teachers have excelled in the fields of sports & co-curricular activities. Our students have won many All Island Competitions as well as International Competitions. The fact that is noteworthy is that the students have won many swimming competitions, although the school does not possess a swimming pool.

Though in this present from, Anuruddha College is less than a decade old, it is interesting to trace its origin to as early as 1895. It has twenty one years of total life to its credit its activities being suspended twice , and for the last time in 1918 On the 10th Octomber, 1895, a band of enthusiastic men in Nawalapitiya started the Saddharmaviwriddhi Samagama, with a view to establishing a school, where secular education would be supplemented by the teaching and the practice of the Dhamma. A site was selected, and a modest sum of Rs 600, which was collected in three weeks time acquired the land. On 20th November the building operations started , and in February 1896,the school began to function with about a hundred children. It was run on such liberal lines that the Moslem population of the town largely patronized it, and Anuruddha College today counts a good number of “Old” boys of the faith of islam, that affectionately remember their Alma Mater. Mr.Gadie Punchihewage Cornelis de silva, one of the founders of the Society was the first Manager of the school. He gifted a valuable property to the school and to the temple, and was farsighted enough to make a proviso that the circumstance, be overlooked in the premises. When he retired from business and went to Galle, he nominated his friend Mr.Baronis, responsible officer in the Railways, as Manager. Mr.Barounis justified the trust and maintained the record of his predecessor until he left the town on transfer.
