City & Guilds was founded in 1878 by 16 Livery Companies and the Corporation of the City of London and we have been at the forefront of technical and vocational education ever since; from awarding our first certificates in 1879 in Cotton Manufacture to delivering online assessments in today’s electronic world.
We have also been involved in many key developments in the vocational education arena over time; such as setting up the Associated Examinations Board (AEB) in 1953, the Business Education Council and the Technician Education Council in 1973, (which later merged to become BTeC), and awarding our one millionth NVQ certificate in 1998. In 2011 we were one of the Premier Sponsors of WorldSkills London.
We have had links with the Royal Family since our inception with King Edward VII becoming our first President in 1881 when he was still Prince of Wales. In 1900 Queen Victoria bestowed a Royal Charter upon us, so formalising our role in the national life of Britain. Our longest serving President was HRH The Duke of Edinburgh who took on this role in 1951 and stood down in 2011 on the occasion of his 90th birthday. We are delighted that HRH The Princess Royal has taken over as our new President.
City & Guilds is also an internationally renowned and respected name. In 1887 we awarded our first certificates outside the UK for exams that were held in New South Wales – Australia. In 1990 City & Guilds International was established and today we operate in 80 countries.
We have been a Registered Charity since 1965.

International Vocational Qualifications (IVQs)
City & Guilds provides IVQs in almost all industries, from engineering to hairdressing and beyond. IVQs provide recognition for the knowledge and practical skills of learners.
Whether you are a beginner or advanced learner our IVQs allows you to progress from Certificate, to Diploma and Advanced Diploma level. After successful completion of each level you will be awarded a Certificate of Unit Credit and if all levels are completed, you will achieve the full qualification.

Single Subject qualification covers all the key skills that both employers and employees need in the modern office from accounting to word processing. They are recognised by employers all over the world, so you can take them with you when you travel!

Where can I take the exam?
City & Guilds exams can be taken at any approved City & Guilds centres or online for a limited number of programmes.
When can I take the exam?
Exams take place during May and June and during November and December.
